The San Francisco 49ers anticipate a bounceback 2025 season but may begin without star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk in Week 1. According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, Aiyuk is expected to start the season on the reserve/physically unable to perform (PUP) list.
Maiocco reported that while Aiyuk's recovery timeline might theoretically allow for a Week 1 return, the organization's consistent internal feeling has been to avoid risks. He stated the 49ers plan to place Aiyuk on the PUP list when training camp opens on July 22, and this designation will likely carry over into the regular season.
Starting the regular season on the reserve/PUP list would require Aiyuk to miss at least the first four games. This follows his October 20th injury where he tore both the ACL and MCL in his right knee.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan had previously indicated Aiyuk would begin training camp on the active/PUP list. This designation allows the team to manage roster spots during camp but doesn't impact regular season availability. Aiyuk was limited to just seven games last season.
Following the trade of Deebo Samuel, Aiyuk is expected to lead the 49ers' wide receiver corps and support quarterback Brock Purdy. However, his recovery from the knee injury means it will likely be some time before he can fulfill that role.
