Bay FC has acquired 19-year-old forward Onyeka Gamero from Spanish club FC Barcelona for an undisclosed transfer fee. The transfer is pending receipt of her international transfer clearance. Gamero, a native of Cerritos, California, has signed with the NWSL club through the 2028 season.
Gamero expressed excitement about joining Bay FC, stating it's the perfect place for her development and that she's ready to challenge herself and learn from the players and coaches. She committed to Stanford as a 17-year-old but instead signed with FC Barcelona B in 2023. She began her professional career there in June 2023, scoring two goals and providing one assist in nine matches before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) that fall.
Gamero has reported to Bay FC and will complete her ACL recovery locally. She is currently following return-to-play protocol while the team assesses the next steps in her rehabilitation.
Gamero has represented the United States at youth international levels. She played at the 2022 U-17 World Cup and moved up to the U-20 team in 2023. At the CONCACAF women’s U-20 Championship, she contributed one goal and two assists in five games, helping the US qualify for the 2024 FIFA U-20 World Cup. She was also a nominee for the U.S. Soccer Young Player of the Year award in both 2022 and 2023.
Bay FC coach Albertin Montoya praised Gamero as a "great young talent with enormous potential" who has only hinted at her abilities so far. He described her as a threat all over the pitch who will continue to improve with development.
