Celtics may cut ties with $285 million NBA Finals MVP, acquire Lakers' 6-foot-5 star guard

The Boston Celtics have improved their financial situation significantly, saving approximately $180 million in tax penalties through recent trades involving Jrue Holiday to Portland and Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta. Despite this, they might explore further cost-cutting measures, including potentially trading their $285 million NBA Finals MVP, Jaylen Brown.

Reports indicate that while the Celtics publicly state they are not actively shopping Brown, they are listening to offers. This follows roster changes like the Porzingis trade and the Jrue Holiday-Anfernee Simons swap. With Jayson Tatum expected to miss much of next season due to injury, Boston appears focused on acquiring youth and flexibility.

A specific trade proposal outlined by Matt Brandon suggests sending Jaylen Brown to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for guard Austin Reaves (27), forward Rui Hachimura, one first-round draft pick, and two second-round draft picks. Reaves fits Boston's youth movement and could fill Brown's scoring role during Tatum's absence. Hachimura, who averaged 13.1 points on over 50% shooting last season, would provide valuable versatility as a wing player.

The rationale includes the belief that Brown cannot carry a championship run alone without Tatum. Brown is considered one of the NBA's best second options, excelling offensively alongside Tatum despite a weaker left hand. He is recognized as an elite scorer for the Celtics when driving to the paint.
