Sporting CP President Frederico Varandas has announced that striker Viktor Gyokeres will face a heavy fine and be required to apologize to his teammates for failing to report to the club's pre-season training camp in the Algarve on time. The 27-year-old Swedish international was due to return on July 12 after an extended break.
Varandas, speaking to Lusa news agency, stated the situation will be resolved "with the closing of the market, a heavy fine, and an apology to the group." He emphasized that Sporting is calm and will not accept less than fair market value for the player, who has three years remaining on his contract and has been linked with a move to Arsenal. Varandas warned that attempts to pressure the club into facilitating a transfer are counterproductive, declaring "No one is above the club's interests."
Gyokeres has been prolific for Sporting, scoring 97 goals in 102 matches since joining from Coventry City in 2023. He scored 54 goals last season and helped the club win the Primeira Liga title in both the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. Sporting's next match is a friendly against Celtic on Wednesday.
