Liverpool to commemorate Jota at Preston friendly

Liverpool will pay tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva at their pre-season friendly against Preston North End on Sunday. This is Liverpool's first match since Jota's death in a car crash last week in Spain's Zamora province, which the club called an "unimaginable loss".

Several commemorative acts are planned for the game at Deepdale: Liverpool's anthem "You'll Never Walk Alone" will be sung, Preston captain Ben Whiteman will lay a wreath in front of away fans, Preston will pay pre-match tributes and produce a special matchday programme, a minute's silence will be observed with televised tributes, and both teams will wear black armbands.

The match kicks off at 15:00 BST and will be broadcast live on ITV and LFCTV.

Jota scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for Liverpool, helping them win the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022 and the Premier League title last season. He scored 14 goals in 49 appearances for Portugal, with his final international match being a Nations League final win against Spain on 8 June.

The Guardia Civil stated that the brothers died when their Lamborghini left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking. They were traveling to the port of Santander so Jota could return to Liverpool for pre-season training. Their funeral took place in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, at the weekend.
