The Denver Nuggets have an ongoing need for a backup point guard behind Jamal Murray, and last season's top reserve, Russell Westbrook, remains a free agent. However, there has been no discussion about a reunion, even though the Nuggets know his capabilities well and could likely sign him for a minimum contract.
Despite significantly upgrading their bench depth overall, the Nuggets have not added a true point guard. They plan to rely on Bruce Brown and Jalen Pickett to handle backup duties during the regular season, but consistently filling that role every night is a significant challenge for both players.
The need is amplified by Jamal Murray's injury history, having missed at least 15 games in six consecutive seasons. With an open roster spot, Denver badly needs a regular-season "innings-eater." While Westbrook is suited for this role, his continued free agency indicates the Nuggets lack interest in bringing him back.
Although Westbrook performed well last season, his style of play is very high-usage and loud, involving frequent shooting and monopolizing possessions. While he provided a needed boost then, the current Nuggets roster has more versatility and seeks to avoid the nightly unsteadiness he brings.
Westbrook's tendency for untimely turnovers, miscues, and wild shots occurred too often, particularly in the postseason. The Nuggets maximized his contribution last year but have now moved on. They aim to diversify their offense, spread the ball around, and run a balanced system with their new additions (Cam Johnson, Tim Hardaway Jr., Jonas Valanciunas, Brown).
The team now requires a steady hand in the backcourt to facilitate ball movement – a role fundamentally incompatible with Westbrook's playing style.
It's mutually beneficial for both sides to part ways. Westbrook declined his player option to become a free agent. While he could theoretically re-sign with Denver on a slightly higher minimum, the lack of movement makes it clear a reunion doesn't make sense. He was a valuable contributor last season and can still help other teams needing offense, but the Nuggets are no longer a fit.
