TOPNBA Star Jalen Williams Says He Retired His Parents, Opens Up on $287 Million Extension

Oklahoma City Thunder star Jalen Williams discussed his rapid rise from an unknown college player to one of the NBA's top young talents within just three years during an interview with TMZ Sports at LAX. Williams, the 12th overall pick in the 2022 draft, highlighted his successful 2025 season, which included All-Star and All-Defensive team selections, winning an NBA championship, and securing a massive five-year, $287 million contract extension. Williams described his journey as "surreal," emphasizing how quickly his life changed. He expressed particular pride in being able to retire his parents, Ronald and Nicole Williams, as a result of his success. Both parents served in the Air Force; Ronald worked as a jet engine mechanic and logistics specialist for 24 years, while Nicole worked in the medical field. Despite his achievements and new contract, Williams admitted he hasn't fully processed everything, including his significant payday, noting that the money hasn't hit his bank account yet. He also mentioned his focus on supporting his brother Cody Williams' professional career with the Utah Jazz, stating he plans to eventually step back and "soak it all in." On the court, Williams played a crucial role in the Thunder's NBA Finals victory over the Indiana Pacers during the 2024-25 season, averaging 21.6 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.1 assists per game.

TOPNBA Summer League: Standout players from Day 10

NBA 2K26 Summer League action continued on Tuesday, featuring standout performances. Terrence Shannon Jr. maintained his scoring consistency for the Minnesota Timberwolves, posting 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals in their win over Detroit. Despite seven turnovers, his scoring and defensive potential are viewed positively as he looks to fill a role vacated by Nickeil Alexander-Walker. The New York Knicks secured a 97-93 victory over the Brooklyn Nets thanks to a complementary effort from MarJon Beauchamp and Tyler Kolek. Kolek carried the offense in the first half with 23 points while Beauchamp struggled. Beauchamp then rebounded in the second half, scoring 20 of his total 25 points. Kolek also finished with 25 points, along with five 3-pointers, four assists, and four steals. The Knicks held off a late Nets rally led by Drew Timme (24 points, 10 rebounds). Ajay Mitchell and Branden Carlson led the Oklahoma City Thunder to a win over the Orlando Magic with a strong combined performance. Ja'Kobe Walter delivered a standout game for the Toronto Raptors, scoring 27 points despite their loss to the Houston Rockets.

Celtics trade proposal pairs two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo with Jayson Tatum
The Boston Celtics are undergoing roster changes following Jayson Tatum's Achilles injury, including trading Jrue Holiday to Portland and Kristaps Porzingis to Atlanta amid financial pressures. Despite this, they retain assets for significant trades, potentially positioning them to pursue Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo if he requests a move. A proposed trade by SI.com's Alan Goldsher would send Antetokounmpo and A.J. Green to Boston in exchange for Jaylen Brown, Payton Pritchard, Anfernee Simons, and three first-round picks (2026, 2028, 2030). Financial viability would require involving at least one additional team, but the framework offers Milwaukee substantial assets if they consider moving their franchise player. For the Celtics, acquiring Antetokounmpo would enable retooling around him and Tatum, with Green—a 25-year-old coming off a career-best season (7.4 points, 2.1 threes per game)—bolstering their three-point system. While losing Pritchard would impact guard depth, younger players like Hugo Gonzalez and Baylor Scheierman could gain opportunities, and Brown would transition to a primary role in Milwaukee.
Is Ant-Man a Top 10 Pick? Timberwolves Fantasy Outlook 2025-26
The Minnesota Timberwolves, having reached the Western Conference Finals in consecutive seasons, aim to build on their success for the 2025-26 season. Key players Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle, and Rudy Gobert are central to their prospects. Anthony Edwards has ascended to become one of the NBA's best players, improving his game yearly. Last season saw significant gains in his three-point shooting (39.5%) and scoring (27.6 ppg). To elevate his fantasy value further and solidify a top-five player status, improving his playmaking (currently averaging 4.5 assists) is crucial. Despite being ranked as the 8th best fantasy player, he is projected as the top shooting guard in fantasy basketball. Rudy Gobert is viewed as a solid fantasy option, offering consistent double-double potential and shot-blocking, providing a safe floor. However, due to limited upside and center position depth, his ranking as the 65th overall and 16th center is appropriate, and drafting him higher isn't advised. Julius Randle presents better fantasy value than Gobert, ranked 76th overall. He delivers above-average production across categories (18.7 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 4.7 apg, 33.1 fantasy points last season) and offers more upside, making him a strong draft choice at his current value. With minimal free agency moves, the Timberwolves expect younger players to step up. Nickeil Alexander-Walker's departure creates opportunities for Terrance Shannon Jr. and rookie Rob Dillingham to emerge as potential fantasy sleepers. Jaden McDaniels is also anticipated to take on a larger offensive role. Overall, the Timberwolves are expected to offer significant fantasy value, led by Edwards (top SG), with Randle seen as a better draft value than Gobert, alongside McDaniels and the potential sleepers Shannon Jr. and Dillingham.
Wings add guard depth with signing before Aces clash
The Dallas Wings signed guard Grace Berger to a seven-day hardship contract on Wednesday to address roster shortages caused by knee injuries to Tyasha Harris and Maddy Siegrist. This move provides critical depth ahead of their Wednesday night matchup against the Las Vegas Aces. DiJonai Carrington remains questionable for the game due to a rib injury that has sidelined her extensively. With Wednesday marking Dallas' final game before the WNBA All-Star break, the team may exercise caution regarding Carrington's participation. Her potential absence increases the significance of Berger's signing for backcourt support. Berger, a 6'0" guard drafted seventh overall in 2023 by Indiana, played two seasons with the Fever before brief stints with Minnesota (released after 2025 preseason) and Los Angeles (one-game hardship contract). Across 48 career WNBA games averaging 13.4 minutes, she holds career averages of 3.8 points, 1.6 assists, and 1.5 rebounds while seeking more consistent playing time to establish herself. This signing occurs as the injury-challenged Wings aim to conclude the first half of their 2025 season positively against the Aces, with tip-off scheduled for 8 PM EST in Arlington.

WNBA players ‘bracing’ for work stoppage with pivotal meeting looming

The WNBA faces a potential labor stoppage after this season due to lagging negotiations between the league and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association. Players had opted out of the current collective bargaining agreement in October 2023 hoping a year would provide ample time to reach a new deal before the agreement expires post-season. However, with the October 31 deadline just 108 days away at the time of reporting, multiple anonymous sources familiar with negotiations indicate players are "bracing" for a work stoppage. This preparation stems from concerns that the pace of talks must increase dramatically in the near future to avoid disruption. A pivotal meeting between WNBA players, union executives, and league officials is scheduled for Thursday in Indianapolis, marking a critical juncture in the negotiation process.

Anthony Edwards Takes Shot at Denver Nuggets While Signing an Autograph

At the NBA Summer League, a young Denver Nuggets fan wearing a Jamal Murray jersey approached Minnesota Timberwolves player Anthony Edwards, who was sitting courtside to watch his team. Someone informed Edwards that the fan was a Nuggets supporter, which was presented as a caution against being overly friendly, likely in jest. Edwards responded quickly and lightheartedly, stating, "It's all good," and adding, "I be busting their a--." This exchange was captured in a clip and shared on social media, sparking discussion. The clip invites two possible reactions: dismissing it as a trivial Summer League moment or questioning whether Edwards should make such a boastful claim. To evaluate his statement, evidence from recent NBA seasons is considered. Historically, the Timberwolves swept the season series against the Nuggets last year, and the year before, they defeated Denver in Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals. However, in the prior season, the Nuggets beat Minnesota in the postseason and went on to win the championship, which remains the only title for either franchise. The author argues that the championship title holds greater significance than regular-season wins, especially since Edwards has not yet reached an NBA Finals despite being discussed as a face of the league. This positions the incident as an ideal mid-July debate topic for basketball fans.

Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo creates interesting contract situation for Knicks wing

Despite no real rumors suggesting Giannis Antetokounmpo wants to leave the Milwaukee Bucks, his comment during a live stream with IShowSpeed about people wanting him to play for the New York Knicks has fueled speculation among Knicks fans. However, there is no evidence indicating he wants to leave Milwaukee, and it seems very unlikely he will play for another team soon. Despite the unlikelihood, analysis suggests the Knicks are reportedly still hoping to acquire Antetokounmpo if he becomes available. His recent noncommittal comments haven't dampened that hope. In such a scenario, Mikal Bridges could become a crucial part of trade talks because the Knicks currently lack first-round picks to offer, and the Bucks would likely prioritize players who keep them competitive post-Antetokounmpo. Signing Bridges to a new contract extension now would complicate matters, as players signing that type of extension cannot be traded for six months. The Mikal Bridges extension situation is therefore significant. While the Knicks have little reason *not* to extend him given what they traded to acquire him, if they genuinely believe they have a chance to land Antetokounmpo, there would be little reason to sign Bridges immediately. Doing so would render him untradeable for half a year, potentially hindering their ability to use him as a trade asset in an Antetokounmpo deal.

What Breanna Stewart Can’t Live Without

The article features an interview with New York Liberty basketball player Breanna Stewart discussing her essential everyday products. She emphasizes the importance of Color Wow hair spray in her game-day routine, specifically for creating a secure, slick top knot that withstands intense activity despite her thick hair. Stewart expresses a long-standing loyalty to Versace Bright Crystal perfume, appreciating its balanced floral scent that isn't overly girly. She applies it before walking onto the court and again at halftime, stating it makes her feel like herself and she dislikes alternatives. Her essential travel toiletry bag, kept at Barclays Center and taken on the road, contains her Color Wow hair spray, basic brushes from stores like CVS or Target, Supergoop! face lotion, her Versace perfume, and Native Cucumber & Mint deodorant, which she likes for its cucumber scent. Stewart enjoys reading mystery thrillers, particularly books by Frieda McFadden, starting with "The Housemaid" series. She reads extensively on airplanes while traveling without her kids. Her team also has a book club, recently finishing "The Silent Patient," where members discuss the books during travel, enjoying the different perspectives shared. While not her everyday cleanser, Stewart relies on the Clinique cleansing balm to effectively remove heavy makeup after events or appearances, finding it especially helpful for stubborn mascara without excessive effort, much to her wife Marta's amusement.

Orlando Magic Coach Reacts To Big Trade With Grizzlies

The Orlando Magic acquired Desmond Bane from the Memphis Grizzlies in an offseason trade, announced by President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman on June 25. The deal sent guard Cole Anthony, guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and multiple future first-round draft picks to Memphis in exchange for Bane. Bane is coming off a strong season, averaging 19.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists, and 1.2 steals per game over 69 contests. He shot 48.4% from the field and 39.2% from three-point range, demonstrating his scoring efficiency. Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley praised Bane's immediate impact, noting that he was already training with teammates Franz Wagner and Anthony Black. Mosley highlighted Bane's work ethic, character, care factor, and leadership as valuable additions to the team. Bane joins a roster led by All-Star forward Paolo Banchero and holds significant historical rankings with the Grizzlies. He is top 10 all-time in franchise history for points, assists, threes, playoff points, playoff rebounds, playoff assists, playoff steals, and playoff threes, where he is the franchise leader. The Magic finished the previous season as the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference with a 41-41 record, securing their second consecutive playoff appearance. However, they were eliminated in the first round by the Boston Celtics in five games.

Ranking Collier, Wilson, Clark and the best 25 players in the WNBA

The WNBA midseason player rankings by ESPN focus solely on current season performance, leading to the exclusion of typically ranked players who haven't played at least half their team's games (like Jonquel Jones and Kahleah Copper) and the inclusion of rookies this time. Napheesa Collier (Forward, Minnesota Lynx, Preseason rank: 2) tops the list for the first time. She leads the league in scoring by a significant margin and is a strong contender for both MVP and repeating as Defensive Player of the Year. Her performance has established her as the league's best player and the Lynx as the best team. A'ja Wilson (Center, Las Vegas Aces, Preseason rank: 1) demonstrated her superstar status with a dominant 34-point, 16-rebound performance in a crucial win over Golden State upon returning from a wrist injury. Alyssa Thomas (Forward, Phoenix Mercury, Preseason rank: 5) is excelling in Phoenix's system, leading the league in assists and shooting a career-high percentage. Her play is a major reason for the Mercury's surprising success, including their high three-point volume and strong defense. Breanna Stewart (Forward, New York Liberty, Preseason rank: 3) has been remarkably consistent, scoring in double figures nearly every game. She is a top-five player in win shares and a foundational piece for the Liberty, despite her three-point shooting slump. Sabrina Ionescu (Guard, New York Liberty, Preseason rank: 7) is averaging a career-high in scoring, demonstrating her ability to take over games offensively. Her intensity and efficiency have been vital for the injury-impacted Liberty. Allisha Gray (Guard, Chicago Sky, Preseason rank: 23) is having a breakout season under a new coach, averaging career highs in scoring, rebounding, and assists. She is shooting 42% from three-point range and earned her first All-Star start, positioning herself for potential All-WNBA honors.

John Calipari Tried To Convince Karl-Anthony Towns To Be Drafted By Lakers In 2015

The 2015 NBA Draft saw the Los Angeles Lakers select D'Angelo Russell with the No. 2 overall pick. Karl-Anthony Towns, the consensus No. 1 pick chosen by the Minnesota Timberwolves, was reportedly advised by his college coach John Calipari to consider dropping to the Lakers at No. 2 to play in Los Angeles instead of Minnesota. Calipari recounted this during a discussion about the pre-draft process for another player, revealing that Towns rejected the idea, stating he would "wear a coat" and preferred the honor of being the No. 1 pick. Towns enjoyed his time in Minnesota. The article argues Towns made the correct decision, noting the historical significance and Hall of Fame probability associated with being a No. 1 overall pick. It contrasts Towns' career path with Russell's, who was traded by the Lakers within two years and has since played for multiple teams. The piece suggests Towns likely wouldn't trade his trajectory to have been drafted by the Lakers instead. Shifting to the present, the article states the Lakers, historically built on superstars, acquired Luka Doncic in a 2025 deal. With the 26-year-old Doncic entering his prime and 39-year-old LeBron James nearing the end of his career (though still elite), the Lakers are beginning to build their roster around Doncic. This shift potentially signals the end of James' tenure with the team, especially as the Lakers chose not to offer him a contract extension this summer. The 2025-26 season could be his last with the Lakers if he continues playing.

3 takeaways from Bucks' reported signing of former Eastern Conference foe

Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers expressed his belief that Myles Turner's abilities would complement Giannis Antetokounmpo perfectly, though the context for this comment isn't elaborated in the provided text. Guard Cole Anthony is set to join the Milwaukee Bucks on a one-year deal. After spending his first five NBA seasons with the Orlando Magic, Anthony was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies this offseason but secured a buyout without playing for them. He is now expected to sign with Milwaukee. Anthony, who alternated between starting and bench roles in Orlando, contributed to the Magic's late-season push to make the playoffs for the second consecutive year following a three-year absence, including winning nine of their final twelve regular-season games in 2024-25. Anthony's signing addresses a need for guard depth on the Bucks roster created by the loss of star guard Damian Lillard, who was waived after suffering an Achilles tendon tear during the playoffs. The article highlights three key takeaways from Anthony's move to Milwaukee. Firstly, his offensive ability is considered his most important attribute. He averaged 12.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists over five seasons with Orlando, ranking him among the top three offensive bench players in the NBA according to ESPN. While his production dipped this past season to a career-low 9.4 points per game due to reduced minutes (18.4 per game) and starting only 22 of 67 games, alongside foot issues causing missed games, increased playing time and better health in Milwaukee could lead to improved output. Secondly, Anthony's scoring is needed. With Lillard out, the Bucks' backcourt lacks scoring punch. Gary Trent Jr. is currently the highest-scoring guard on the roster, averaging 11.7 points per game in the regular season. Anthony and Trent Jr. are likely to compete for minutes at the guard position. Thirdly, the Bucks need to replace Lillard's three-point shooting. Despite a first-round playoff exit and scoring inconsistencies, Milwaukee led the NBA in three-point shooting percentage during the regular season (38.7%). Lillard was a significant factor, leading the team with 3.4 made threes per game. His absence creates a void that needs filling to maintain their strong outside shooting.

Pistons fans may have jumped the gun on Malik Beasley

Malik Beasley is under investigation by the US District Attorney's office concerning irregular gambling during the 2023-24 NBA season, a significant offseason story with potential major ramifications for Beasley, the Detroit Pistons, and the NBA. Following the report, Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, stated that "an investigation is not a charge," emphasizing the presumption of innocence. However, many fans on social media have presumed Beasley's guilt, citing his play with the Milwaukee Bucks and financial struggles. The investigation's timing is detrimental for Beasley and the Pistons, as they were likely to sign a new contract shortly after free agency began. This situation contrasts with Terry Rozier's case last season; Rozier continued playing because he wasn't charged and was eventually cleared, but he benefited from being under contract during his investigation. The investigation was reportedly sparked by unusual betting activity on Beasley's rebounding prop bet before a January 31st game between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Milwaukee Bucks. A large, unexpected surge in bets predicted Beasley would grab fewer than 2.5 rebounds. However, Beasley secured 6 rebounds, causing those bettors to lose. Currently, the reported specifics involve unusual bettor behavior surrounding Beasley's games. There is no reported evidence of Beasley exhibiting strange on-court actions during these games, unlike the Jontay Porter case where Porter left a game early with an "injury" after heavy betting on his unders, leading to his league ban. The article concludes by urging fans to grant Beasley grace and presume innocence until the investigation concludes. It highlights how the legalization of sports gambling fosters an environment where players face suspicion about their integrity, suggesting Beasley might be a casualty of this trend and the NBA may need to take further steps to protect its reputation and players.

Donovan Mitchell called Sam Merrill right after he signed: ‘He deserves it’

The Cleveland Cavaliers secured a key free-agent move by re-signing sharpshooter Sam Merrill to a four-year, $38 million contract. Merrill, a career 38.6% three-point shooter, was instrumental in the team's bench success last season, appearing in 71 games (starting only four) while averaging 7.2 points and shooting 37.2% from deep over a career-high 19.7 minutes per game. Teammate Donovan Mitchell personally congratulated Merrill after the signing, praising his development and hard work. Mitchell humorously suggested the Mormon athlete celebrate with an alcoholic shot despite religious prohibitions. Merrill's journey to this contract involved overcoming early career challenges—as the 60th overall 2020 draft pick, he played just 41 games total in his first three NBA seasons before solidifying his role. This extension follows Merrill's consecutive impactful seasons as a reserve, potentially cementing his long-term future with the Cavaliers. His retention gains added importance after Cleveland lost elite bench scorer Ty Jerome—a recent Sixth Man of the Year finalist—to the Memphis Grizzlies in free agency. Fans hope Merrill's floor-spacing abilities can offset Jerome's departure and that he'll achieve a career-best year in his sixth NBA season. The deal raises questions about Merrill's motivation to further develop his game now that financial security is established, adding intrigue to his upcoming performance.

Sixers soundbites: Tyrese Maxey on VJ Edgecombe, playing with childhood friend Trendon Watford and more

Tyrese Maxey and Trendon Watford, childhood friends now teammates on the Philadelphia 76ers, were observed watching the Summer Sixers play the Charlotte Hornets alongside head coach Nick Nurse. Both expressed excitement about finally playing together instead of against each other. A point of friendly disagreement persists between them regarding their first meeting at a youth basketball camp as teenagers. Maxey claims Watford and his friends didn't want to talk to him because he wasn't highly ranked at the time, a claim Watford repeatedly disputes. Maxey insists the media should trust his history of telling the truth over the past five years on this matter. During halftime, Maxey and Watford spoke to media about their enthusiasm for being teammates. Maxey also shared his early impressions of the Sixers' No. 3 overall draft pick, VJ Edgecombe, and discussed his plans for leading the team's young backcourt. The report includes specific soundbites from Maxey in Las Vegas covering: how he discovered Watford was joining the Sixers; what on-court contributions Watford can bring; and his initial thoughts on Edgecombe.

Lakers, Knicks Blockbuster Trade Proposal Sends LeBron James to New York

LeBron James opted into his player option with the Los Angeles Lakers, but his future with the team remains uncertain as the franchise shifts focus toward building around Luka Doncic rather than pursuing immediate championship contention. While a trade involving James is considered unlikely, rumors are circulating about potential moves, including one to the New York Knicks. A specific trade scenario proposed by Bleacher Report's Dan Favale suggests a 1-for-1 swap where James would be traded to the Knicks in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns. This deal would integrate James into a Knicks lineup featuring Mikal Bridges, Mitchell Robinson, Jalen Brunson, and OG Anunoby. For the Knicks, James' addition could significantly reduce pressure on Brunson by allowing him to play off the ball more often and rest during possessions, leveraging James' passing and scoring abilities. Defensively, pairing James with Robinson could enhance the team's overall performance. For the Lakers, acquiring Towns—a five-time All-Star and skilled offensive big man—could create a strong pairing with Doncic, as Towns' floor-spacing ability complements Doncic's playmaking. Towns is under contract until 2028-29, with a player option for $61 million in 2027-28, providing the Lakers with cost certainty through his prime years. However, potential downsides include the Knicks' motivation to offload Towns' hefty contract, which could total over $160 million in the next three seasons. Towns' defensive limitations against quicker players, combined with Doncic's own defensive struggles, might make this pairing risky for the Lakers in terms of cap management and team balance. Adding to the speculation, LeBron James has acknowledged considering a move to the Knicks earlier in his career, further fueling discussions about this possibility.

A'ja Wilson's Mom Needed Just One Word To Make Aces Star Regret Her Postgame Outfit

Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson was interrupted during her postgame press conference following a record-setting performance in the Aces' 104-102 win against the Golden State Valkyries. While speaking to reporters at Michelob Ultra Arena, Wilson paused the interview after her phone buzzed under the table. Laughing at her mother's critique, Wilson proceeded to remove her red headscarf right there at the press table. This moment was captured and shared on social media by Bleacher Report. The clip quickly went viral, with fans flooding the comments section expressing amusement and relatability. Reactions included fans stating everyone needs a mother like Wilson's who keeps them humble, joking that moms always know how to humble their children, and likening the text to a "real-time family meeting." Kang LeeSeul drives Korea’s ambition for redemption

Kang LeeSeul played a pivotal role in South Korea's 78-76 victory over New Zealand during Day 2 of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2025, marking her fifth appearance in the tournament. Before exiting late in the third quarter, she contributed 19 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and six three-pointers, setting the tone for a hard-fought win that avenged Korea's narrow loss to New Zealand in 2023. This victory reignited Korea's hopes of returning to the top four and restored team pride. Kang expressed strong personal motivation for this game, driven by the 2023 defeat where New Zealand, for the first time in tournament history, prevented Korea from reaching the semi-finals. She reflected on the sting of that loss, stating, "They defeated us in the last tournament. Because of them, we fell outside of the top four teams," and emphasized her excitement about her new role as team captain, her first in her Asia Cup career since debuting in 2017. Reflecting on the 2023 shortcomings, Kang acknowledged, "In the last tournament, we did not really play well," and stressed the team's goal to achieve better results this year. Despite the lingering disappointment fueling their drive, she highlighted the need for consistent execution against all opponents, sharing, "Regardless of our opponents, we have to execute our plan and do what we practiced. We have to be confident throughout the tournament to reach the top four or higher." Kang's resilience, leadership, and clutch performance—including her shooting, defensive intensity, and composure under pressure—are crucial as Korea seeks redemption from the 2023 setback. Her ability to blend veteran experience with youthful energy anchors the squad, which now faces a competitive field including powerhouses like China, Japan, and Australia in their pursuit of renewed glory.

Anthony Edwards' Exchange With Nuggets Fan Goes Viral

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards attended Saturday's NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas, where his team defeated the Denver Nuggets 94-83. While supporting his teammates, Edwards drew attention by signing an autograph for a young Nuggets fan wearing a Denver jersey. Damian Lillard Has One Reason To Choose Heat Over Celtics

Damian Lillard reportedly has mutual interest with the Boston Celtics, but analysis suggests the Miami Heat might be a better fit. Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports, appearing on CLNS Media's Garden Report, acknowledged Boston's appeal for Lillard recovering from an Achilles injury, as he wouldn't need to be the primary star behind Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, allowing for rest and load management. However, O'Connor highlighted a significant downside for Lillard in Boston: the potential role. He questioned whether Lillard would want to join a team where he might be the backup point guard behind Derrick White and Payton Pritchard. O'Connor argued that a team like the Miami Heat offers Lillard the opportunity to be the clear starter and regain his status as the primary option, "Damian Lillard again." This analysis points to a potential competition between the Eastern Conference rivals for Lillard. O'Connor noted that Boston's depth at guard, specifically White and Pritchard, is a major deterrent for Lillard that the Celtics couldn't easily fix without making unwise roster moves. Ultimately, Lillard's decision is framed as a choice between seeking more touches and offensive opportunities (potentially with Miami) or prioritizing a greater chance of contending immediately (potentially with Boston).

Anonymous Executives Have No Faith in Pacers Repeating as East Champs in 2025

The Indiana Pacers achieved a surprising run to the NBA Finals this season, defeating the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference playoffs despite low external expectations. However, anonymous NBA executives, as reported by ESPN, have no faith in the Pacers repeating as Eastern Conference champions next year. In fact, none of the executives even mentioned Indiana as a contender for the East title. The primary reason cited is Tyrese Haliburton's devastating Achilles injury suffered in Game 7 of the Finals, which has already ruled him out for the entire 2025-26 season. Executives believe the Pacers cannot replicate Haliburton's unique playmaking and offensive tempo, making their offense more predictable without him. Myles Turner's departure after ten seasons with the Pacers is another major factor. The team loses their starting center and, crucially, his high volume of three-point shooting (5.5 attempts per game last season), which was a key element of their unpredictable offense. Finding a comparable replacement, especially a "stretch five," is seen as difficult with current roster options like Jay Huff. Despite these significant losses and the executives' lack of confidence, the Pacers organization, led by Kevin Pritchard, is accustomed to being underestimated and still believes they can compete.

Former president of Denver Nuggets Timothy Leiweke indicted, accused of bid rigging by federal grand jury

Former Denver Nuggets president Timothy Leiweke has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of bid rigging. The indictment accuses Leiweke, currently the CEO of Oak View Group (OVG), of orchestrating a conspiracy to rig the bidding process for a multi-purpose arena project on the campus of a public university in Austin, Texas. The Justice Department alleges that between approximately February 2018 and June 2024, Leiweke conspired with the CEO of a competitor. The scheme began when Leiweke learned a competitor was bidding against OVG for the project in September 2017. He expressed a desire to "get them some of the business" to make them "back down," explicitly stating he had "no interest in working with them if they intend on putting in a bid." In February 2018, Leiweke reached an agreement with the competitor's CEO: the competitor agreed not to submit a bid in exchange for receiving subcontracts on the Arena Project. As a result, OVG became the sole qualified bidder, won the contract, and the arena opened in April 2022, generating significant ongoing revenue for OVG. Justice Department officials condemned the alleged actions. Assistant Attorney General Abigail Slater stated Leiweke "rigged a bidding process to benefit his own company and deprived a public university and taxpayers of the benefits of competitive bidding." FBI Assistant Director Christopher G. Raia emphasized that public contracts require "an open and competitive bid process" and stated the FBI is determined to prevent benefits from rigged processes targeting public institutions. In connection with the conduct alleged in Leiweke's indictment, OVG and Legends Hospitality have agreed to pay penalties of $15 million and $1.5 million, respectively. Leiweke himself is charged with violating Section 1 of the Sherman Act, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $1 million criminal fine for individuals.

Jimmy Butler Makes Personal Decision After NBA Season

Jimmy Butler, after being traded to the Golden State Warriors from the Miami Heat midway through last season in a deal that sent Andrew Wiggins, Kyle Anderson, and a first-round pick to Miami, has launched a business venture in San Francisco. The owner of BIGFACE coffee, Butler has partnered with Square to bring his coffee brand to the Bay Area. He stated that San Francisco's legendary coffee culture makes it an ideal location, aiming to connect more deeply with the community that has embraced him. According to EATER SF's Paul Bicchieri, the BIGFACE location in the Mission will offer espresso drinks, cold brew, pour-over coffee, bags of the hard-to-find coffee beans, and exclusive merchandise. Drink infusions will include vanilla, salted caramel, and strawberry. On the court last season, Butler helped the Warriors reach the second round of the playoffs, defeating the Houston Rockets before losing to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He averaged 17.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game.

Ex-NBA player wants Paolo Banchero to take on role that Anthony Edwards rejected

Orlando Magic star Paolo Banchero has signed a five-year rookie maximum contract extension with the franchise worth $239 million, potentially reaching $287 million if all incentives are met. Following the signing, Banchero declared his priority is to win an NBA Championship for Orlando. Former NBA player Matt Barnes, reacting to the deal, urged the 22-year-old Banchero to embrace becoming one of the future "faces of the NBA." Barnes praised Banchero's size (6'9" or 6'10"), versatility, competitive drive ("he's a dog"), and accomplishments – including NBA Rookie of the Year and an All-Star selection – arguing he deserves consideration for this prominent league role within the next three to five years. Barnes' co-host Rachel Nichols agreed, stating that winning Rookie of the Year inherently launches a player into that conversation. She implied Banchero's main hurdle is the lack of a deep playoff run on his resume. Banchero currently averages 22.4 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. The discussion arises as current faces of the league, LeBron James and Stephen Curry, near retirement. While Minnesota's Anthony Edwards was seen as a frontrunner, he openly rejected the idea of being the NBA's face. Barnes and Nichols suggest the league could instead turn to Banchero or potentially Luka Doncic (now with the LA Lakers) to fill this role, emphasizing that Edwards' rejection leaves other options open.

Tuesday night Aces-Liberty WNBA matchup ESPN's 'most-watched non-Indiana game' in 26 years

ESPN's broadcast of Tuesday night's WNBA game between the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty drew a significant audience, with the Liberty's win averaging 701,000 viewers and peaking at 813,000 viewers. According to reporter Madeline Kenney, this marked the most-watched non-Indiana Fever WNBA game broadcast on ESPN (E1) since 1999, a comparison she clarified applies to regular-season games. The report acknowledges that the Indiana Fever, featuring star Caitlin Clark, remain the WNBA's top ratings draw. Examples cited include an ESPN Fever preseason game drawing 1.3 million viewers in May and an Ion broadcast of a Fever game exceeding one million viewers even without Clark playing. Despite this, the Aces-Liberty matchup is highlighted as one of the league's premier contests. Both teams have won the last three WNBA championships (Aces in 2022 and 2023, Liberty in 2024) and currently hold the first and third-best records in the league this season. The strong viewership for Tuesday's game is therefore seen as a positive indicator for the WNBA.

Unrivaled Ambition: Inside the Bold, Player-First Vision of the Women’s 3v3 Basketball League Disrupting the Game

Unrivaled, a new 3-on-3 women's basketball league co-founded by WNBA stars Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, is focused on building its own identity rather than relying on men's sports. John Learing, the league's Chief Content Officer, emphasized their athlete-first core principle and ambitious goal to rewrite the rules of elite sport, content, and community. Despite starting just 12 months ago with no players, logos, archive, or footage, Unrivaled has successfully completed its first season, attracted a devoted fan base, and gained attention beyond traditional women's basketball audiences. This was achieved through sporting innovation, content-led growth, and a tech-savvy, values-driven approach. The league's foundational mission is to elevate women athletes on their own terms, which included raising private capital, offering players equity, and ensuring equal pay comparable to "the best on the planet". The league features an unconventional format distinct from Olympic 3x3. It utilizes a shortened full-court game on a 72-foot-long floor designed for high-intensity, end-to-end play. A key rule innovation replaces the fourth-quarter clock with a "target score," guaranteeing every match ends on a game-winning shot. Learing highlighted the demanding nature of this format, stating players must create and defend effectively with fewer players on the court. Learing stressed that Unrivaled's key differentiator is its digital-first approach to fan engagement, calling digital content the true focus of the league. This commitment was essential, especially during the nine months without live games. They built brand equity through storytelling, behind-the-scenes access, and fan co-creation even before the first game. Season 1 served as a testing "lab" to experiment with content across platforms like TikTok and YouTube, learning that a one-size-fits-all strategy fails and understanding audience preferences. Operating with a lean team and limited budget, Unrivaled relies heavily on data and AI tools for growth. Learing stated they depend on data constantly and cannot afford to operate on hunches. Looking ahead to Season 2, AI will be more deeply integrated into content workflows to support volume and experimentation, but Learing insists the goal is to augment human creativity, not replace it, with maintaining emotional connection being the critical factor.
